Yes spring has sprung and for many it’s the start of the gardening season in earnest. The RHS Garden Shows are underway and it’s National Gardening Week between 30th April to 6th May. This year the focus of National Gardening Week is to encourage gardeners to share their love of gardening.
At Pure Chiropractor in Staines our chiropractors encourage everyone to stay active and gardening is a great way to this. It gets you active and also outdoors which has a host of benefits in its self. However whist we encourage gardening as an activity we do want to share some advice for you to to stay safe as gardening isn’t without its potential pitfalls.
It’s not uncommon for our chiropractors to see patients who have over indulged in their gardening activities only to find themselves in pain afterwards. Common symptoms we treat are back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and knee pain.
Our number one piece of advice to keep yourself safe in the garden is to pace yourself. Digging over the complete vegetable patch may seem like a good idea but it may be worth thinking how many hours of digging that will involve and break it down into smaller sessions.
Before starting, warm up with some simple stretches and start slowly. Remember to take regular breaks, every 20 minutes to give your body a rest and to change your routine.
Stay well hydrated.
Finish off by doing your stretching routine.
We have plenty of advice on staying safe in the garden on our Gardening page on our website. Take five minutes to read through it and take the advice on board and hopefully you won’t need to visit us for some post gardening treatment any time soon!
